PlayItLoud! Holy F.ck! was the first thing that came out of my mouth when I heard the opening track. All the bulls!t has been skipped, what's left is the bare essence of music; rhythm, melodie and tone of "voice" of a single instrument in each track. Track 1,2 & 4 are piano, 3 is violin and 5 sounds like a harmonium but after reading it seems to be a horn. Every track a belter, I started to follow this label just 2 days ago, and this is what I get.... Me a Happy Camper.... Hail the Belgians! Favorite track: City Rush.

about

Sander De Keere (1992, Ghent) is a Belgian musician and composer of minimal classical music. His work arises from a minimalistic approach, as a musical reflection on our everyday lifestyle. Apart from music productions for television, theatre music, soundtracks for podcasts and his work as a radio host, his musical practice balances between composing and performing, between the repetitive and the meditative, between music as a conceptual process and music as a narrative medium.

As part of his upcoming album Primitive Structures on W.E.R.F. records in January 2022, Sander releases a first glimpse with ‘Con Moto’, a composition for piano and horns where we get to know his personal idea of minimal music: “Minimal music is my answer to our modern and hasty way of living. The long repetitive patterns and meditative atmosphere in my work can be a musical antidotum to our short-term goals and fulfillments. As part of this reaction, I don’t want to stick to any musical convention, which really feels like a revelation. I know where my compositions start, but not how they will end.”

The starting point of Con Moto was the Italian musical term con moto, a direction in music meaning: in a lively or spirited manner. “In this case, I didn’t give the instruction to the pianist, but to the music itself,” Sander says. “The dialogue on the piano between the left and right hand creates a certain motion, which is emphasized even more by the horns. Ironically, the only way to create a lively motion in the music, is to play ‘Con Moto’ very steadily and consistently.”

In the track ‘Con Moto’, Sander focuses on rhythmic and melodic structures which start to intertwine with each other. “I wanted to maintain a clear view on the minimalistic idea behind the piece. That’s why I asked other musicians to play it, so I could focus more on the experience of the work, rather than on playing it myself. Working with other musicians was very enriching and made the idea behind ‘Con Moto’ and, by extension, the idea behind the whole album Primitive Structures even more clear and sharp.”
