In 2012 beslist pianist/componist Kris Defoort, na heel wat omzwervingen in de wereld van opera en hedendaags klassiek, zich terug te focussen op zijn eerste liefde: jazz. In zijn gloednieuwe trio lijft hij naast zijn jarenlange compagnon de route Nic Thys (elektrische bas) de jonge beloftevolle drummer Lander Gyselinck in.

De debuutplaat van dit trio ‘Live From Bruges’ (W.E.R.F.100) werd in de pers enthousiast onthaald en herbevestigde meteen de status van Kris Defoort als één van de absolute grootmeesters op de vaderlandse jazzscene.

Bij vriend en acteur Josse De Pauw viel de muziek van het Kris Defoort Trio eveneens in de smaak en hij beslist hen in te lijven voor zijn nieuwe theatermonoloog ‘An Old Monk’. Vanuit het oeuvre van jazzlegende Thelonious Monk zoeken ze in dit muziektheaterstuk naar het moment waarop lijf en geest op elkaar raken afgestemd. De voorstelling werd een schot in de roos en toert intussen de hele wereld rond.

Ter gelegenheid van de 100ste voorstelling van ‘An Old Monk’ wordt deze nieuwe CD ‘Monks Dance’ van het Kris Defoort Trio voorgesteld. De plaat bevat naast eigentijdse bewerkingen van standards ook eigen composities en collectieve improvisaties in de geest van de illustere pianist Thelonious Monk. Als toemaatje werden enkele bonustracks met Josse De Pauw toegevoegd.

This is a album I've gone back to several times. Matt lets his group play, and play they do. All of these pieces fell like full-group efforts, not written by a bassist to feature bass. Some songs feel driven, some searching, some making statements. Outstanding. Kenneth Pyron
