Sound, intimacy and freedom. These keywords inspired saxophonist/composer Lennert Baerts while writing the material for his brand new album “I choose not to”. In no time Lennert has emerged as one of the most captivating young voices in Belgian jazz. With Profound Observer, he brings together intriguing personalities and colors, bridging styles, temperaments and generations in one movement.
Lennert impressed not so long ago by releasing two albums in one fell swoop (with his quartet Anti-Panopticon and the Muze Jazz Orchestra), exhibiting his ambition as a musician and composer. Whether it's jazz in many forms or chamber music, Baerts has mastered it all. It promptly earned him a spot among De Twintigers of Klara, a national radio broadcast show. The pace at which this artist continues to explore and evolve appeals to the imagination. It is no different with Profound Observer. For this he collaborates with the ubiquitous guitarist Vitja Pauwels (Bombataz, Naïma Joris, Lara Rosseel,...) and drummer Daniel Jonkers (Orbit Folks, Tim Finoulst,...).
For the recording of the album, Baerts also invited a Belgian jazz icon. Bert Joris is one of the few Belgian jazz musicians who works at the highest level as a musician, composer and arranger. His lyricism and elegance are renowned far beyond the country's borders and in combination with the young musicians of Profound Observer it leads to a cross-pollination that is so much more than the sum of its parts. A new and a familiar sound, to be discovered together.

This could’ve been my album of the year if I’d noticed it. Hell. 2020, feeling like shit and then this musical balm appears. Live recording on one mic. Just bass and harp. Awesome.
