about

Dear Darkening Ground is the brand new album by Belgian singer with Irish roots Natashia Kelly. Kelly took inspiration for 'Dear Darkening Ground' from poets such as R.M. Rilke and W.B. Yeats, who wrote more than a century ago about man's place in nature: will man remain part of it, or will gain prevail? Words that now turn out to be prophetic. It motivated her to work with lyrics that reflect a changing zeitgeist. They warn of the danger that a flawed relationship between man and nature can pose, but also want to make a hopeful sound: things can be done differently.
It leads to music that has a message full of poetry to tell in a turbulent period. For this she can call on heavyweights from Belgian jazz: Ruben Machtelinckx is one of our most fascinating guitarists and is on the seesaw between improvisation and contemporary experiment. Pianist Nicola Andrioli played alongside Philip Catherine and is a master of lyricism. Bass player Yannick Peeters made an impression with her international dream project GingerBlackGinger and Dré Pallemaerts is simply an indispensable link in Belgian music all round.
The musicians are anchored in jazz, but also allow pop and folk to seep in. They play with panache and refinement, tailored to the voice and lyrics, which come to the fore more than ever, but at the same time form a perfect blend with the music. 'Dear Darkening Ground' remains open and accessible, looks for hope and goes straight to the heart.
